THE
SQUARE RESTAURANT in Margaretville's Binnekill Square is one
of those warm and vibrant restaurants you dream about. The hosts
Walter and Jackie Keller make it inviting from the spacious bar
to the gracious dining room overlooking the Binnekill stream.
The major ingredient of any successful restaurant, of course,
is their ongoing consistency in preparing and serving excellent
cuisine. Their customers revel in their rotating specials as well
as their original menu, a combination of Swiss, French and Italian
cuisine as well as American favorites.
Walter tells his history
with the voice of experience from a chef that has been proven.
A Swiss native, like many other europeans coming to this country,
went to a Hotel School in Switzerland, apprenticed in Zurich,
and gained much experience in cooking in leading hotels in Switzerland
as well as, such as the Trinidad Hilton. His excellent cuisine
was recognized in NYC Restaurant Association awards for cooking
in the Tower Suite on top of the Time/Life Building and the Rainbow
Room & Grill in the RCA Building, NYC.
He and his wife Jackie
first opened both the Swiss Restaurant Roxbury Run in the Catskill
Mountains that remind them of Swiss Jura Mts., then - in 1981
took over The Binnekill Square Restaurant in Margaretville. They
are now celebrating the Square's 20th anniversary.
The creative menu
contains specialized dishes and favorites for Appetizers,
Pastas, Main Courses, and Desserts. French Onion Soup, Escargots
Bourguignonne, Mussels Casino,Roasted Red Peppers with Capers
and Anchovies or Potted Shrimp are just a few selected appetizers
Some of the Specials he treats his guests to on his revolving
list are dishes like Cordon Bleu,Veal Matterhorn (veal with prosuitto
herbed butter & munster cheese), Venison Stew, Chateau Briand
for Two, Octoberfest Platter, Filet Mignon Au Poivre, Surf & Turf,
Cheese-filled Spinach Raviolis.
All of his dishes display
his extensive chef talent and he enjoys a la carte cooking. All
of their desserts are homemade from Chocolate Mousse to Parfaits
and a variety of cakes. Walter always uses the freshest of ingridients
if possible from local sources. All fish are fresh from various
Fish markets.
The
Square can accommodate up to 80 guests and is open all year long,
Every Thursday and Sunday, they offer the Schnitzel Menu (at
$12.75 per person, incl. soup or salad, and dessert) (Schnitzel
is a veal cutlet prepared in various ways). Try their large range
of Schnitzels: Holstein, Jaeger, Cheese, Wiener, combination with
Shrimp Scampi or Fried Shrimp, and you will love their authentic
tastes.
The regular menu is available
also. For this is one chef who really enjoys what he does...it
shows in his menus, his pride in creating a restaurant, and in
his good humor about his artistry. And when you go, you will be
charmed too by the ambiance, the warm smiles and the great food.
At the Bar/Cocktail
Lounge or at your Dinner table you can enjoy a perfectly prepared
Cocktail; if you want to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with your
meal, you can be assured of a quality selection from the wine
list and a nice selection of imported and American beers.
